Introduction: Motorola iDEN GPS/Java Enabled Phones

About Motorola: Motorola is a Fortune 100 global communications leader that provides seamless mobility products and solutions across broadband, embedded systems and wireless networks. Seamless mobility means you can reach the people, things and information you need in your home, auto, workplace and all spaces in between. Seamless mobility harnesses the power of technology convergence and enables smarter, faster, cost-effective and flexible communication.

Motorola offers market changing icons of personal technology. They are a leader in multi-mode, multi-band communications products and technologies, and mobile devices designs. They manufacture, sell and provide services to wireless subscribers. Manufactured systems include: server equipment for cellular systems such as the Mike/Telus, portable energy storage products and systems, and servers and software solutions and related software and accessory products.

Motorola is the basis of the Mike/Telus phones. One important feature that Motorola provides for Mike/Nextel is the GPS compatibility . Whether you need turn-by-turn driving directions or a smarter way to manage your mobile travel needs, the GPS location-based safety services like Mobile Locator, allows you to locate your fleet at anytime right from your computer.

Another important feature of the phone is its Java compatibility. Java technology opens up a wealth of exciting possibilities. It enables just about any application -- including games, tools, and information programs and services -- to run on just about any computer or device. GPSNet uses the java technology as the building foundation for the GPS tracking software that is installed right on the phone.

What is GPS?

Global Positioning System, is a satellite navigational system formed by 24 satellites orbiting the earth and their corresponding receivers on the earth. The satellites orbit the earth at approximately 12,000 miles above the surface and make two complete orbits every 24 hours. The GPS satellites continuously transmit digital radio signals that contain data on the satellites location and the exact time to the earth-bound receivers. The satellites are equipped with atomic clocks that are precise to within a billionth of a second.

By using three satellites, GPS can calculate the longitude and latitude of the receiver based on where the three spheres intersect. By using four satellites, GPS can also determine altitude.

GPS has applications beyond navigation and location determination. GPS can be used for cartography, forestry, mineral exploration, wildlife habitation management, monitoring the movement of fleet and bringing precise timing to the world.

Having the GPS adapter installed on the Mike/Nextel phones allows for GPSNet to receive the latitude and longitude of the phone's exact position. GPSNet needs more than just this, it needs a software to obtain this information. Thanks to the Java technology, we can do this.

What is Java?

A high-level programming language developed by Sun Microsystems. Java was originally called OAK, and was designed for handheld devices and set-top boxes. Oak was unsuccessful, so in 1995 Sun changed the name to Java and modified the language to take advantage of the burgeoning World Wide Web.

Java is a general purpose programming language with a number of features that make the language well suited for use on the World Wide Web. Small Java applications are called Java applets and can be downloaded from a Web server and run on your computer by a Java-compatible Web browser. It can also be downloaded and ran on a GPS phone. In fact, the software GPSNet has designed was built using the Java technology. Once the GPSNet Java program files have been installed and a couple of minor alterations have been made, the phone is then ready to track positions.

How Often Would I Receive Position Updates From the Phone?

Every five minutes a position is received from the Mike/Nextel GPS phone. We only choose to update the position within GPS if the following exceptions have occurred:

If the vehicle is “In Service”…
• We either update the position in GPS411 once every hour OR if the last known position in GPS411 differs from the
newly obtained position from the phone.

If the vehicle is “On a Load”…
• We either update the position in GPS411 once every 20 minutes OR if the last known position in GPS411 differs by
more than 5 miles from the newly obtained position from the phone.

The position updates are treated as check calls in the GPSNet system. You can view these position updates/check calls from more than one screen within GPSNet.

Besides Tracking, Can the Phone Send Significant Trip Updates?

Of course, that is what differs GPSNet from all the other tracking solutions currently out there. Besides tracking, the driver can be trained to send significant trip updates through the phone straight to your desktop computer (your login), as well as request routing and directions at anytime.

A list of available events/macros that the driver can send or request are:

  • Send Arrived
  • Send POD
  • Send Arr. Border
  • Send Dep. Border
  • Request Routing (using PC Miler 18)
  • Request Directions
  • Request Trip Info.

For more information on the available macros please contact GPSNet.
